Veronica Mason—lead singer of the rockabilly band The Voodoo Zombies—discovers her vampire bass player staked through the heart. A vision of the murder flashes in Veronica’s mind and she wonders if she’s going bonkers. Up until now her supernatural skills consisted of a few botched love spells.

Using her sexy voice and pin-up style has paid off, she’s about to land a record deal. But suspicion soon turns to her when another vampire turns up as nothing more than a pile of ashes a vacuum would have a hard time sucking up. Veronica has another vision, and she has to hone her paranormal powers or lose her deal—and possibly her life.

When an utterly delicious mystery man steps in as the new bass player, Veronica can’t figure out if he’s there to help or cause more problems. What she does know is she can’t resist his good looks and sex appeal. She wonders if they’d make rockin’ music together. But helping the undead could stop her from finding out and leave Veronica dead—permanently.

Fun read. Stand -alone paranormal mystery/romance series. No graphic violence or drag-you-down drama.

Interesting storyline with enough twists to keep the reader guessing. Believable, imperfect characters with distinct personalities and paranormal traits. Entertaining and humorous dialogue.

'Four hours performing in heels made my feet scream like pre-teen girls at a boy band concert.'

'As I placed the herbs in the boiling water, I spoke the words: Protection from all negativity surrounds me. Harm threefold to thee who sends destruction my way. All hateful actions directed toward me, will be inflicted upon thee. So mote it be.'

Rock 'n' Roll is Undead edition by Rose Pressey Romance eBooks Reviews

What intrigued me most about this one was the Memphis Rockabilly scene in which the story is set. IMHO, Rockabilly is waay underrepresented in pop culture in all media, yet it's so rich in material. What's not underrepresented, though, is vampires. In this story, I felt the paranormal element detracted from what would otherwise be a pretty decent introduction to a mystery series.

I loved the mixture of Rockabilly sensibilities and the small-time music scene--for a long time, most publishers didn't want to touch any story that prominently featured a musician, and I think the world got deprived from that attitude. The drama between Veronica's band members felt real and honest, and they intrigued me, especially her quarreling with the guitarist, Frank. The murder mystery starts with the murder of their bassist, Johnny. Veronica experiences some paranormal things when she discovers the body, but I honestly thought they were unnecessary. The story could have stood by itself without the addition of vampires and witches or Veronica's sadly useless visions surrounding the bodies she's discovered. A murder mystery in the Memphis scene alone would have kept me reading.

The scenes focused around building the "scene" with the sensibilities of mid-century America (suburban tracts, backyard BBQs, and homogeneity) and the Rockabilly subversion of that aspect of the culture, but the story would have been better served if the scenes also deepened the characters. I wanted to see Veronica more actively pursuing her answers, rather than running from stalkers. Some of her decisions surrounding her stalkers were unwise, and skirted near TSTL territory. However, the seeds were planted for her mistrust of the authorities and it's a shame that the author didn't play up what would be a clearly classic Rockabilly theme of "our kind versus The Fuzz" and have served the sense of cozy mystery a lot more effectively.

There's a very subtle throughline running through the whole story that I really want to congratulate the author for. For large swathes of the story, I felt like I was watching a drive-in B-movie of the era--and I mean that as a compliment! The same young people who were the original source material of the Rockabilly vibe were the teens and young adults who flocked to the drive-ins to neck and be scared by tough-acting pin-up bombshells making unwise personal choices and running with the Bad Crowd of greasers, rock'n'rollers, and bikers. In this way, some of the story heroine's personal choices make a certain kind of sense, and would have felt more natural had the supernatural element been taken out.

Nevertheless, I hope the author continues the series, because the scene is rich with potential, and I think the author has the potential to tap into all the wonderful quirkiness of the scene. As a side note, I would love to see the cover redesigned with a more Rockabilly sensibility to it, rather than the more paranormal feel the current cover gives. This is not her strongest novel, but I like the concept well enough to look for a follow-up book.

Who will like this book Fans of the Rockabilly scene will enjoy seeing some of the elements of the lifestyle. People who miss musician heroes in their stories will like the idea of a torch singer solving music scene crimes. Fans of light, quirky paranormal series who don't take their vampires too seriously, and who allow a series to find its footing will enjoy the potential this series has.
Another winner from Rose Pressey! Let the fun begin.

Veronica mason and the Voodoo Zombies are playing at a vampire bar, with a record producer coming out to hear them in a few days. All of a sudden mayhem breaks out in the form of a vampire bar fight. When the coast is clear enough Veronica starts making her way to her car. She stops by the new bass player's van and finds him in ashes. With a vision of the staking playing in her mind. So begins this delightfully fun book. Veronica is a witch. One who you could say that her major accomplishment is casting a spell that doesn't ignite. Her best friend Kitty is a werewolf. With staked vamps and visions of the murder on the rise, it is up to Veronica to figure it out. Oh and did I mention the hot new bass player who comes on the scene after her bass player dies? Is he there to help her or just a distraction? But really what's a little distraction when he looks this good?
Summary
Veronica is the lead singer in the "The Voodoo Zombies" a popular Rockabilly band that is on the verge of being signed. She is also a witch with disappointing powers. A couple of days before her big gig with the record producer coming to see her she stumbles upon her bassist (who also happens to be a vampire) ashen corpse. Veronica is shaken by this find, but the show must go on with the biggest gig of her life right around the corner. The next day auditions are held and one bassist in particular catches her eye. Not only is he drop dead gorgeous but he is a fantastic bass player. Veronica knows she has found her man, well not her man since she has sworn off band mates, but her new bass player. Unfortunately she can't deny the amazing connection. When Veronica finds another dead vampire who is a part of the Rockabilly scene Veronica starts to suspect that she may be the next target and wonders if the killer might be someone close to her...

Review
I really enjoyed this book; Veronica is a very likeable character. She works very hard on her band and has a lot of ambition and drive. Her frustration over her magic but refuses to give up is admirable and shows strength of character. The byproduct of Veronica attempting magic is quite humorous and will give you a chuckle. In general in this book you will find that Rose Pressey has a great sense of humor and you will laugh quite often. I also really enjoyed the Rockabilly aspect of this book. I can't say that I am a huge Rockabilly fan but I do find the culture intriguing, especially the fashion. Also, I believe this is the first PNR or even Contemporary novel I have read featuring this sub-culture of music. You will find rock, metal and even country fairly often but not Rockabilly which adds a unique perspective to this book. The side characters in this book are also entertaining and all have a well developed personality of their own. Over all this is an enjoyable read and since Ms. Pressey is an independent author you can get her books at a steal! I believe I only paid $3.00! Rock On! I will be continuing on with the series.
